Postdoc (Researcher) Indoor-SLAM with UAV-based lidar data

  • Location: Enschede, Netherlands
  • Organization: University of Twente
  • Deadline: 23 June 2021

JOB DESCRIPTION

The project is part of a large-scale research project funded through the Horizon 2020 funding scheme of the European Commission, entitled “The first responder of the future: a Next Generation Integrated Toolkit for collaborative response, increasing protection and augmenting operational capacity” (INGENIOUS; see https://ingenious-first-responders.eu/). The project has 23 participating organisations from 15 European countries and is co-led by ITC. The overall aim of INGENIOUS is to develop a toolkit that makes the work of first responders safer and more effective. This will be achieved by developing smart tools and novel ways to make the derived information available to first responders. The project also has a strong focus on the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). Their purpose is to provide, partly swarm-based, indoor localisation and mapping and tracking of responders in GNSS-denied settings, but also to allow exterior building mapping and 3D reconstruction to be propagated to immediate interior building parts, for which novel methods based on advanced photogrammetry and computer vision, but also machine learning, e.g. with CNN, need to be developed. The project has been ongoing for about 1.5 years, and a full time PhD researcher has been working at ITC on the questions listed above. The purpose of the advertised researcher is to develop synergistic methodologies, specifically focusing on the use of UAV-based lidar data and simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM).

The project is shared between ITC’s ESA and EOS departments, and requires occasional work in the field (experiments in Spain and France are planned), or at partner’s premises.

It will be your responsibility to address the following specific problems:

  • development of novel approaches for the processing of UAV-based lidar data, in particular focusing on SLAM
  • advance the use of lidar data, in conjunction with other relevant sensor data, or semantic scene understanding in challenging indoor environments.
  • Collaborate with the PhD student who focuses on the use of optical imagery for scene understanding, to explore synergistic potential
  • Collaborate with the project partner developing the UAV carrying the lidar among a host of other sensors, FOI in Sweden, to optimise the exploitation of such data in first response situations.

YOUR PROFILE

We are looking for a creative and motivated candidate.

You should:

  • have a PhD degree related to geoinformatics or robotics, with excellent expertise in lidar remote sensing, SLAM, computer vision, and very good programming skills. Prior expertise in indoor mapping, as well as multi-senor data integration, will be an asset.
  • be at ease engaging with scientist from different disciplines (engineering, robotics, ICT etc.) and cultures, to maximise the results from this research. This is because of the large number of project partners, which leads to many research issues needing to be addressed by different experts, and dependencies with tasks and work packages of other partners.

Since the work should start as soon as possible, preferably you would be available within maximum 2 months.

OUR OFFER

We offer an inspiring and challenging international environment. You will be initially employed for two years. Extension of the employment after this period is a possibility.

  • Gross monthly salary between € 3,217.- and € 4,402.- (depending on experience and qualifications, job profile Researcher, level 4).
  • A holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8.3%
  • Excellent support for research and facilities for professional and personal development.
  • A solid pension scheme
  • Minimum of 41 holiday days in case of fulltime employment
  • Possibilities to save up holidays for sabbatical leave
  • Professional and personal improvement programmes

INFORMATION AND APPLICATION

Please submit your application before 23 June 2021 (choose “apply now” below). Your application has to include (i) a motivation letter clearly stating how you meet the selection criteria and also outlining your research and (ii) a detailed CV with references.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Earth Systems Analysis of the faculty of Geo-information Science and Earth Observation at the University of Twente is looking for an Earth scientist with experience in the characterisation and monitoring of subsurface processes and/or structure. The Department of Earth Systems Analysis combines Earth science knowledge with spatial modelling and advanced remote sensing to understand Earth processes in space and time. Our education and research contribute to the sustainable use of energy and Earth resources and help reduce disaster risk and the impact of natural hazards on society. Our aim is to build capacity and strengthen institutional development of both professional and academic organizations as well as individuals. We work specifically in countries that are economically and/or technologically less developed.
