Job Description (Assistant Professor):

Introduction
The University of Lausanne is a higher teaching and research institution composed of seven faculties where
approximately 17,000 students and nearly 5,000 collaborators, professors, and researchers work and study.
Ideally situated along the Lake of Geneva, near Lausanne’s city center, its campus brings together over 120
nationalities.

Presentation
The Faculty of Geosciences and the Environment (FGSE) of the University of Lausanne invites applications for a
professorship in 4D digital field and structural geology, to be based in the Institute of Earth Sciences (ISTE).

We are looking for a candidate capable of leveraging remote sensing technologies (e.g., UAV mapping, structure
from motion, LiDAR, hyperspectral and thermal cameras, inSAR, airborne imagery, geophysics) to advance fieldfocused structural geology research. We are particularly interested in research aiming at understanding the
formation of mountains, their transformations and rock deformation through space and time (4D) by linking
surface observations with, for example, deep structural constraints offered by geophysics, structural geology
concepts or process-based modelling. The ideal candidate has a strong collaborative spirit and is willing to develop scientific collaborations over multiple domains of expertise within the Earth sciences. Knowledge about geology of the Alps and/or future research plans for this region is desirable. We are also interested in candidates addressing societal challenges related to the environment, resources or infrastructure. A willingness to contribute to structural geology teaching including field-based courses is expected.

Information
Appointment will be at the Assistant Professor level (tenure track). However, exceptionally, we will consider
outstanding candidates for direct appointment at the Associate Professor level, particularly if this corresponds
with our equal opportunity objectives.

Starting date: 1st of August, 2022 (or to be agreed upon)
Contract length: 2 years renewable twice (6 years). Tenure and promotion to the rank of Associate Professor
expected after 5-6 years, leading to further contracts renewable every 6 years.
Activity rate: 100 %
Workplace: University of Lausanne (Géopolis building)

Responsibilities
The successful candidate is expected to i) develop a competitive research program within the Institute of Earth
Sciences, ii) teach courses in the Bachelor of Geosciences and Environment, and Master programs taught by the
FGSE, and, iii) supervise bachelor, master and doctoral students.

Qualifications
Candidates must demonstrate a capacity to undertake high quality research, to obtain research funding, and to
publish in peer-reviewed international research journals. A demonstrated potential for teaching and for
supervising master and doctoral theses is required.

A good command of French and English is preferable. If French is not the native language, teaching ability in
French has to be acquired within two years of the appointment.

What the position offers
The Faculty of Geosciences and the Environment (FGSE) of the University of Lausanne was created in 2003 and
offers state-of-the-art facilities (e.g., LiDAR instruments, UAVs and software to process SfM, GB-Insar, thermal
and hyperspectral cameras, GPU and CPU-based computing facilities, geophysical equipment, a multitude of
laboratory facilities including those listed here: https://unil.ch/iste/en/home/menuinst/laboratoires.html),
incentives for projects, and excellent working conditions. It consists of three research institutes (Earth Sciences,
Geography and Sustainability, and Earth Surface Dynamics) and a School that manages teaching. The FGSE
specifically promotes interdisciplinary research and teaching, within and between the social and natural sciences. We offer a competitive start-up package and long-term support in terms of an internally funded post-doc. The University has many measures in place to facilitate the life for parents/guardians of young children, including on campus childcare (https://www.unil.ch/familles/en/home/menuinst/parents-and-children.html).
