Job Description ( Researcher: Landslide Mapping)
NGU’s Geohazards and Earth Observation section is looking for an independent and highly motivated geologist or geotechnical engineer. The tasks are mainly related to quick clay, mapping, GIS analyses and databases. As a researcher at NGU, you will be part of a large and competent professional working environment that strives to meet the academic and societal challenges within most aspects of the discipline of geology. You will be presented with various exciting professional challenges and the opportunity to participate in collecting geological data, field mapping, follow-up analyses and interpretation. The position will include gathering data for entry into databases, creating maps, and analysing data relevant for understanding quick clay, landslides and landscape evolution. An essential part of the work at NGU is the publication of maps, reports and scientific articles and presenting results at academic meetings.
- Fulfilled a PhD or MSc in Quaternary geology, geotechnical engineering, or an equivalent before starting the position. Relevant job experience is valued.
- Good knowledge of Quaternary geology and geotechnics combined with a good understanding of quick-clay related problems acquired through working with the subject. A vital element of the job is to serve as a link between geotechnicians and geologists.
- Good knowledge of glacial geology and related problematics associated with the Northern Hemisphere.
- Experience with advanced GIS tools.
- Driver’s license.
- Knowledge and experience in mapping and interpreting geomorphology and landscape evolution.
- General understanding of susceptibility, hazard and risk concepts.
- Experience in using and interpreting geophysical data for quick-clay mapping.
- Experience with relevant fieldwork and mapping.
- Basic mathematical knowledge combined with an interest in statistical and probabilistic analyses.
- Experience with project management.
- In addition, knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas of expertise will be an advantage:
- Modelling of slope stability
- Run out modelling for various landslide types
- Mapping and analyses of other landslide forms (mainly debris slides, rock avalanches and unstable rock slopes, or rock falls).
- Applicants should master a Scandinavian language. Norwegian language training will be offered for otherwise well-qualified candidates.
As a researcher at NGU, you will work in and possibly lead various interdisciplinary projects. Hence, you must be good at cooperating and communicating, both internally and externally. The Section for Geohazards and Earth Observation cooperates closely with the public sector, particularly with the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE).
