Job Description (GEOSPATIAL INFORMATION OFFICER):

Org. Setting and Reporting: The United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) provides critical Supply Chain, Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies services and Training to all Secretariat Entities, Peacekeeping and Special Political Missions, Agencies, Funds and Programmes of the UN system worldwide.

This position is located within the Client Solutions Delivery Section (CSDS), Service for Geospatial Information and Telecommunications Technologies (SGITT), of the UNGSC, Brindisi, Italy.

The incumbent will report to the Chief of Data and Visualization Unit within the CSDS, or designated officer.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Geospatial Information Officer is responsible for the following:
• Locates and defines new geospatial visualization process improvement opportunities.
• Uses appropriate geospatial data sources (including open data and big data) for analytics projects.
• Collaborates with data engineers and data scientists to improve data flows, data quality, and visuals for the Client Solutions Delivery Section.
• Collaborates in the development and implementation of geospatial databases, geospatial data collection systems, geospatial data analytics and other strategies that optimize statistical efficiency and quality.
• Performs and documents methods, processes and quality assurances of visuals, web and paper maps (Base, topographic and thematic maps).
• Coordinates and communicates with clients and stakeholders on collection and sharing of geospatial data; Promotes services and undertakes the timely exchange of geospatial information and day-to-day geospatial operation matters.
• Develops and implements various analysis, reporting, visualization and symbology standards and Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) procedures for all products generated and disseminated by the Section, including geospatial data and maps. Coordinates the creation of online dynamic web maps, web services and visualization dashboards, including on the enterprise geoportal.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in geoinformatics (geomatics), geospatial information, Earth sciences, remote sensing or other related geoscience field. A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Job – Specific Qualification

PRINCE 2 or ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) certificate is desirable.

Work Experience

A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in geospatial information management, applied spatial analytics, earth observations, mapping, applications development, data visualization or related area is required.

Experience in utilizing geospatial software in mapping and web services development, including producing vector tiles, geospatial dashboards and publishing geospatial contents is required.

Experience in using ESRI Enterprise tools and extensions is desirable.

Experience in managing multidisciplinary teams is desirable.

Experience in designing, developing and managing maps visualization and symbology standards is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required; . Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
