Postdoctoral Researcher Scientists

  • Reference Number 4895
Project “Deformation mechanisms along the Main Marmara Fault DeMMaF”

We are seeking a postdoctoral research scientist to work in the frame of the project “Deformation mechanisms along the Main Marmara Fault DeMMaF” funded in the DFG Priority Programme of the International Continental Drilling Program SPP 1006. The main objective is to assess how the rheological configuration of the lithosphere in concert with fluid dynamics control the present-day deformation and stress field along the North Anatolian Transform Fault in the Marmara region (NW Turkey) in order to improve the seismic hazard assessment for the mega city of Istanbul.

Your responsibilities:

  • extension and refinement of an existing 3D structural/density/rheology model integrating seismological data from the crustal/mantle tomography (velocity models of the mantle and the crust,) with gravity field data
  • modelling of the present-day seismo-tectonic state of the transform fault system in the Marmara region using new methods to simulate the coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical processes controlling the present-day stress and deformation field
  • simulation of different thermal, deformation and stress field scenarios while integrating observational constraints on the hydraulic and mechanical activity of faults
  • cooperation with project partners in Turkey as well as with other SPP members working in the GONAF observatory or in other transform fault settings (e.g. San Andreas fault)
  • presentation of results at scientific meetings and publication in peer-reviewed journal
  • compiling project reports and deliverables

Your qualifications:

  • Master’s degree and PhD in Earth, Environmental or Physical Sciences, or in a related field
  • advanced expertise in numerical modeling and complex simulation environments
  • background in 3D data integration
  • knowledge of deformation principles, in particular fault characteristics and behavior
  • demonstrated expertise in controlling factors for the thermal, deformation and stress field and the rheology of the lithosphere
  • experience in modeling of coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical processes (programming skills, background in HPC environments and hybrid parallelization concepts are an asset)
  • familiarity with the regional geology of the North Anatolian Fault Zone
  • demonstrated capacity for international teamwork and excellent communication skills
  • creative and critical thinking and the ability to publish, demonstrated by a record of original and innovative publications

Start date: as soon as possible
Fixed-term: 36 months
Salary: This position has been assessed as being salary group 13 according to “TVöD Bund (Tarifgebiet Ost)”. The salary group will be determined by the conditions of the collective wage agreement and the appropriate personal qualifications
Working hours: full-time (currently 39 h/week); The position is, in principle, suitable for part-time employment.
Place of work: Potsdam
