GIS Specialist

Job Description (GIS Specialist)

Job Objective: Under light supervision, develops and implements basic to moderately complex GIS products and applications. Performs the design, development, manipulation, management and distribution of geospatial information of basic to moderate complexity. Supports geospatial application configuration and integration, deployment of GIS datasets with 3rd party applications. Provides quality control oversight of GIS products and services developed by more junior staff.

Duties & Responsibilities

GIS Data Development and Analysis
Under light supervision, reviews data sources, supports GIS data development activities and recommends approaches for geodatabase design, data development, quality control, and data delivery – for project activities of basic to moderate complexity. Conducts GIS analysis to support clients and projects. This may include the generation of geospatial statistics, 3D and spatial analysis, and temporal analysis within a standard GIS software environment.

GIS Analysis and Consulting
Under light supervision, leads technical aspects of GIS needs assessments and/or other GIS consulting activities such as strategic plans, upgrade evaluations, etc. Leads group and individual discussions with clients to gather data. Evaluates requirements and develops conceptual designs for systems and applications that will address requirements.

Application Development and Configuration
Supports application development activities through completion of requirements analysis, application specification and conceptual designs, and basic application configuration using industry standard GIS-based environments. These could include web, mobile, and dashboard applications. Develops designs that can be reused for other projects. Supports end user testing.

Database Design and Implementation
Under limited supervision, conceptualizes and designs databases of basic to high complexity including designs that incorporate spatial data, detailed data model of a database and integrate with 3rd party applications.

System Architecture Design
Supports the development of GIS-based system architecture plans including development of recommendations for GIS, hardware, software, geodatabase design, and enterprise geodatabase implementation.

Database Design and Implementation
Under limited supervision, conceptualizes and designs databases of basic to high complexity including designs that incorporate spatial data, detailed data model of a database and integrate with 3rd party applications.

Technical Guidance
Provides technical guidance and training to more junior staff. Reviews the work of more junior staff.

Proposal Development
Provides proposal development support including graphics development and basic scope development.

Technical Luminescence
May attend conferences, symposia, etc. to improve the visibility of the firm’s products and services in collaboration with applicable sales staff.

Performs other duties as required.

Technical Knowledge Management (TKM)
Contributes to firm’s TKM by assisting in the development of white papers and technical design documentation of new or special case designs, studies, etc. Submits technical papers and designs for publishing to technical journals with approval and review.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Geoinformatics, Geography, Environment, Geology, Computer Science, Science.
Minimum of 8 years progressively responsible experience applying GIS technology.

Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office software suite including Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word. Familiar with Microsoft SQL Server Software.

Advanced knowledge of Esri ArcGIS 10.x and extensions viz., Spatial, Network, 3D, Tracking, Data Interoperability, Data Reviewer. ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Enterprise, GPS technology, ArcFM, model builder, Python for ArcGIS, ArcGIS Mobile, Survey 123, and related geospatial software tools.
Knowledge of Specialty applications, such as , programming software viz., JavaScript, C#, HTML, and Business Analytics software.

Background Check and Drug Testing Information

CDM Smith reserves the right to require background checks including criminal, employment, education, licensure, etc. as well as credit and motor vehicle when applicable for certain positions. In addition, CDM Smith may conduct drug testing for designated positions. Background checks are conducted after an offer of employment has been made in the United States. If this position is subject to a background check for any convictions related to its responsibilities and requirements, employment will be contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation including criminal history. Criminal history will not automatically disqualify a candidate. In addition, during employment individuals may be required by CDM Smith or a CDM Smith client to successfully complete additional background checks, including motor vehicle record as well as drug testing.
